Week 11: Common Craft

I’m kind of obsessed with Common Craft, the website that makes the “____ in Plain English” videos. It reminds me about what McLuhan said about how we treat the new mediums like the old mediums. Common Craft uses cut out drawings and felts to ‘plainly’ explain how different things work.

My favorite video is “Zombies in Plain English”. I sent it to everyone I know.
When it comes to learning how certain technologies work, reading about it can be completely useless to me. I love to use different programs and applications, but the technology behind them usually go right over my head. Computer technology can be really uninteresting to me unless someone shows me or explains it to me using examples and metaphors. Common Craft goes just far enough that I don’t feel like I’m being treated like an idiot, just more like a kid, which is fine because it helps.
I like the look of different genres being mixed together too. Paper cut out drawings and felts, hands moving the drawings around, ect.

Week 12: My Thoughts about Digital Media

As someone who doesn’t have any previous experience with digital media, I found this course a great introduction to the mad amount of creative and productive projects which can be produced from learning the skills the course teaches.

My favourite part of the lab class was the flash project. It was difficult at first because it was so different from anything I’d ever done before, but once I spent some time on it (okay A LOT of time and a lot of help from other people) it got to be really awesome to see the project advance. I had no idea I could learn to create something like that in such a short period of time. Again, it was a great introduction to what I could possibly create in the future if I kept working with the program.

My favourite part of the lecture class is the creativity of the slides. It’s a really great representation of how the use of digital media can improve any type of presentation. It’s great to learn about current uses of digital media, because it makes it more interesting and important to learn about.

As far as improvements go; I would suggest having more assistants in the media lab (229) during class times and times around project due dates because a lot of students have to wait hours to get questions answered because the one assistant is helping a list of people ahead of them. This is hard on the students and the assistant.

In regards to the lecture, I would suggest either slowing the slides down a bit or posting them all on Blackboard. I can sometimes keep up with taking notes, but then I have no time to answer questions.

Although I have decided to wait until I have had a taste of the video and other courses next semester before deciding what I want to focus on in the future, I know I won’t be spending most of my time in digital media classes. However, like Lauri has said, digital media is in everything we do, especially if I choose to focus on video. The reason I know I won’t be taking a lot of digital media focused courses in the next few years is because, although I enjoy working on computers, I don’t want to spend EVERY MOMENT while I’m at school/work working on one. Audio allows you to work on boards, create sounds, record sounds, work with other people etc. While it doesn’t always have to be this way, digital media can be completely done on the computer and without the help of anyone else. I like to work in groups, even if it is challenging and frustrating at times.

The most important skill I learnt from this course is probably flash, although web design will no doubt come in handy as well. With Flash I can do everything from animation to movie credits. Web design is handy because, no matter what you do, your company will have a website, and if you know how to make one, then it will save you from having to pay someone else to do it for you. I think Photoshop is essential, but I didn’t actually learn much about Photoshop in this course. The most important thing I learnt from the lectures was definitely the CRAP principals. I have never been very good at visual art, but now that I know to use the CRAP principals, I know I can create something that looks professional and attractive.

Week 10: Web 2.0

Characteristics that define Web 2.0:

1. Dynamic content, viewable on multiple platforms

Twitter has a new application called tweetwally.com. Tweetwally allows you to customize a page that will only display the tweets which you want to follow. The content on Tweetwally is dynamic as well as user generated and social: Web 2.0. Tweetwally can be used for multiple platforms like projectors and smart phones.

2. User contribution (user generated content or user generated value)

YouTube is a perfect example of user contribution. YouTube is a website which relies on content of the users. Not only does YouTube rely on the users’ content, but YouTube also keeps track of the most popularly viewed videos, videos being watched now, as well as allowing users to comment and rate the videos. The video created by the guy who wrote “one world” on his hand and received thousands of video replies is an example of user generated content and value.

2. Social media

Facebook is generated by online media that provides opportunities for socializing, connecting, and sharing. Facebook is the ultimate socializing network; users create profiles (creating an image and personality: online identity), event pages (organizes and plans parties and meetings), groups (connecting people who have a similar interest or hobby), ect. Facebook also allows users control what other people see and what they don’t. Connecting through Facebook is easy. People will never get bored of connecting with people in new and different ways. The need to share pictures is one of the main reasons Facebook has become so popular. Socializing, connecting, and sharing: Web 2.0.

4. Online applications (http://www.go2web20.net/)

Memoov.com is an example of an online application of Web 2.0. memoov is a website which allows the users to create simple animation movies and post them up on the memoov site and YouTube.com. Memoov is dynamic, generated content, which is shared amoung users = Web 2.0.

5. Harnessing collective intelligence

BitTorrent is a program used for sharing audio and video. Users upload and download files for and from other users.

BitTorrent uses Peer-to-Peer Networking (P2P): communication/file sharing between users/computers/nodes ect.

Artist Statement

For my animation project I have created an interactive Family Tree. I got this idea because I want an easy way to keep track of and keep in touch with my family. Someday I hope to turn the project into a family website, but for now I’m keeping it simple and close to my parents.

I started by spending a lot of time on the phone with my parents asking about names, dates, and who is related to whom. Once I knew whom I was going to include in my family tree I tried to draw it on a piece of paper. Turns out families don’t really look like trees. It took a while before I came up with a style that looked good and made sense.

Once I had a solid sketch I sat down in front of the computer and copied the sketch onto Flash. I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to fill the tree in after I drew the outline. I eventually put the tree on Photoshop, filled it in on there, and took it off as a .psd file. Then, inspired by a flash project watched in digital media lab, I erased a small amount of the tree in the second frame, and then a little more on the third frame, and so on. Once I had erased the entire tree I reversed the frames and watched the tree grow.

I wanted the tree to have some life to it so I created a movie clip of a leaf blowing slightly in the wind. I spent hours trying to make it turn at the right point, and then I had mistakenly created a tween within a tween, so it was going too fast. After lots of help and time I eventually got the slow tween I wanted and added the movie clip all over the tree.

The buttons on the tree were a little tricky too. I made them grow in the over stage so the words are readable, but then some of the names overlapped or escaped the screen. I played with this for a while before I realized I could simply make the stage larger so see the names when they escaped the page. If I had the time I would make the tree a bit smaller and find a way to make the names readable without adjusting the stage size.

The profile frames were easy to make but consumed a lot of time. I couldn’t find the right type on Flash so I created all of the text on Photoshop then imported the file over, which didn’t always fit, so there was a lot of re-saving and re-importing. I had to compile pictures and information about people, some of whom I don’t know very well at all. I decided for the purpose of this project I will keep the profiles simple, but if I were to expand the project I would make the profiles more personal, and definitely include birth month and date, not just the year.

I kept the color scheme simple. I knew the tree was going to be brown, the leaves green, and then I experimented with the background until I realized a light yellow with spray painted yellows and oranges looked best. I wrote down the exact green and brown that I liked and copied these colors for the text and picture frame in the profile frames. Brown: 4F2509 Green: 07a507.

Finally, I added a forest ambiance to the project and the effect tied everything together beautifully.

Week 6: Flash Family Tree

Describe your idea for your Animation/Interactivity assignment (which is due in Week 9). What inspired this idea? Which examples shown in lecture/lab gave you inspiration? What other examples exist on the Internet that can act as examples/inspiration? (Link to them and describe how they are relevant.) What will you have to do to accomplish your idea (e.g. any research, skill building, etc.)? Which techniques in Flash will you employ to make it happen?

For my animation project I have decided to create an interactive Family Tree.

I got this idea after recently meeting up with a family member (whom I’m not ever sure how I’m related to) and talking about other family members (which I can’t remember the names of). She told me that she has a section of her family tree copied down, and that she knows of other people in the family who have done the same. She asked if I could take on the responsibility of the records she has been holding onto. I realised immediately that the best way to keep all this information was online.

Someday I hope to turn the project into a website, but for now I’m keeping it simple and close to my parents.

An example from class that helped me figure out how to make the tree grow. I learned I have to draw the full tree, place it on a future key frame, and then work backwards, erasing more parts on every previous frame until I reach the first frame which only has the roots.

I looked up a bunch of flash examples online, but none were very similar to what I have in my head.

I want people’s names be buttons on the tree and when you click on one you go to another frame which has a short bio and picture of that person.

For my movie clip I’m going to have small leaves on the tree which will constantly be waving in the wind.

I haven’t chosen music yet because I know that will be easier to choose once more of the project is done. All I know is that I want it to be subtle.

Week 8: Digital Footprint

We recently discussed our digital footprints, and how important they will be when we begin our careers. I realized about a year ago that I needed to adjust my privacy settings on my Facebook page. I don’t mind having pictures of me at parties, as long as I still look respectable. I doubt my future employers are going to expect me to look like I don’t have any fun. I have friends who have Facebook albums of them doing drugs and other things which I know would repel any employers from hiring them.
In regards to web pages, I looked up maggiemacpherson.com/.ca/.net and the address is not taken yet. I want to buy the .ca one for sure and maybe the .com one too. I hope I am successful enough some day that people are actually thinking of me when they Google my name. When I Google my name I get a few other Maggie Macpherson’s on Facebook, one on LinkedIn, and a mention of a woman in the New York Times who works in Film. So it looks like I have a good shot at having a distinctive Digital Footprint.
Wikipedia split up Digital Footprints into two types: passive and active. A passive digital footprint is created by other users, such as being mentioned in a blog or article or being tagged in another user’s photo. Active digital footprints are created by the user, examples include creating your own Facebook page and albums, creating your own blog, writing an article, or creating a web site.
The passive digital footprint scares me. I have had to ask people to delete or un-tag photos of me before and it is not fun. Luckily, I have no enemies, and hope to keep it that way, but if I did, it doesn’t take much to spread rumors throughout Facebook and Google and anywhere online. This is why I am glad that teachers teach their students to find credible sources, we need to know not to trust everything we read, because someday it may be about us. Facebook and YouTube have pretty much made everyone possible paparazzi. This may not be such a bad thing though. Actions have consequences, especially in a time which is so obsessed with communication.
I have a prediction about the digital community and gossip. It’s not even really a prediction since it has already started. I think that there will be very little if any credible online information anymore. Before Web 2.0, most people believed everything they read came from facts. They may have disagreed with it, but, compared to now, they didn’t wonder whether or not the entire story was made up. Now, everything we read needs to be questioned. Also, when I hear about a celebrity or anyone being pursued by the media, I usually feel sorry for them. They are people, they make mistakes, and if my life was under a spot light then I would have a few scandals on my record too. I think the public is realizing this and, I hope, we stop obsessing over the mistakes of people around us and start celebrating their accomplishments and use mass communication to learn from each other instead of hurt each other.
I got a little side tracked there…in short I’m going to work on my digital footprint this winter holiday and maybe create another blog or web site.

Week 4: Typography

Find 3 designs (posters, flyers, billboards, magazine ads/layouts, album art, political propaganda, product labels, product packaging, DVD covers, whatever) and discuss the typographic choices made in the design. Is the typography effective? Why or why not? Does the typography effectively address a particular target audience and / or support the central message or theme of the design? Etc. Try to identify the font used if possible.
You may photograph or scan the designs, or find them on the internet. Give credit for where you found the designs.

Express More With A Touch:

The first image I chose to analyze is an advertisement for Nintendo DS touch.

The typography for this ad looks hand drawn with a pen. This is perfect because they are advertising a product that uses a digital pen. The ad is covered in black and red ink which ads to this creative/artsy theme. Creativity doesn’t follow rules such as consistency in font size and position. The letters are slanted and squished together at one end.
This typography is effective and definitely speaks to its creative young target audience.

The Living Dead:

The second image I chose is a student’s assignment which required an oxymoron with image to support.

The reason I was pulled to this image is because it is simple. The Giant “DEAD” looks like it is underground/buried. I think the image isn’t necessary but mostly because I’m not sure what it’s representing. The use of the hunters for the “I”’ is effective though. I also enjoy the word “DEAD” in the big “D”. The black and white contrast/appose each other as well. Good typography always includes the CRAP principles too.
The typography is good, but not great. I'm really not sure what the message or the target audience is. The student should have come up with a target audience and clear concept and then figured out how to incorporate an oxymoron.

I love the look of this image. Every few words are in a different type and size. The “look” is very old time circus. It looks aged and is in black which is appropriate with the time period it is supposedly written in.
The word “TURN” has playing card suits on it.
The type at the top and bottom are very similar, which is good use of repetition.
Another use of repetition is “takes something” and “turns it into something” are the same type.
“Ordinary” is in a type which looks ordinary to me because it is relatively simple type.
The giant “&” is brilliant. The size of it reflects the size of the word “Turn”. Both “turn” and “&” make me pause for a second after I read them because I put more focus in them. for example, if “into” was in a huge font the flow wouldn’t work as well.
The centered alignment of the poster makes it obvious that the words are the only focus of the image.

This image is effective because it reflects the style of the movie from which it is from and speaks to its target audience (people who have seen the movie,18-40ish market).

For my Photoshop poster assignment I chose to use a topic I am passionate about, vegetarianism. I wanted to be specific, so I chose milk, and the negative health effects it has on people, specifically children. I chose a target audience of women, 18-35, especially those who may be pregnant or already have young children. This is because it is much easier for younger people to change their way of thinking about milk than it is for older people. Pregnant women and mothers are much more likely to educate themselves on the truth about milk because they are responsible not only for their own heath but for that of their child as well.
The process of creating the poster taught me a lot about Photoshop. I spent a long time playing around and discovering different choices I could make. I wanted to keep it simple, focused, and yet informative. Some of my drafts had a lot of excess information that made the poster look too busy and complicated.
I started off by resizing the picture of my roommates friends baby, Josh, so that it would fit the poster size of 8x10 inches. Then I used the polygonal lasso to cut out the baby and paste it onto the blank background of my poster. The baby already had a questioning expression on his face but I wanted to exaggerate it so I distorted the eyebrows by moving his inner eyebrows up a little. I wanted color to make the poster more attractive so I selected the eyes with the magic wand and changed the color of them to blue by using color balance.
I created a black background and chose white lettering. I made sure I used CRAP. White and black are my favorite contrasting colors because they are simple and effective. I know people are going to want to know more so I put the website in blue lettering against a white strip so it would stand out against the white lettering on black background. I repeated the color white, as well as the color blue in his eyes and the CTA at the bottom of the poster. I played around with the alignment until I found positions which were as pleasing to look at as possible, and I made sure none of them covered Josh’s face or were too close to each other.
I learnt how to adjust the fonts kerning’s and other aspects such as covering parts of the feet in the word “got” until I found a look that I thought resembled the “Got Milk” campaign as much as possible. I used drop shadows to make the words more visible on the lighter parts of the poster.
I faced quite a few challenges when creating this poster. My first challenge was coming up with an original idea. I had started a CD cover and almost finished before I realized I didn’t like it and had a much better idea. The CD cover was taking forever and didn’t look very good at all. It looked this way because I didn’t know what the CD cover was about, who it was for, or why I was doing it. Once I came up with a focused concept, everything became much easier. My biggest challenge after that was making sure the poster wasn’t too wordy or busy looking. I deleted a lot of statistics and quotes that crowded the page and made the message unclear.
In conclusion, I am happy with the outcome and hope that my message interests people enough to check out the website and learn more for themselves. Most of all, I am happy to know I can create an image which grabs attention while also looking professional.

Week 3 - Color

Week 3 No specific topic given this week. Decide for yourself what aspect of the digital media class (lecture and/or lab) you want to reflect on or explore further in your blog post for this week.

I started working on my CD cover yesterday and found that it’s a bit harder than I’d thought. I picked a picture of my sister, Brie, and a background from my home town and the title “Free Fall” because it seemed like an appropriate album title. I wanted to make as many changes to Brie as possible, so I started by trying to make her a blonde. When I was done it looked really fake. I used brightness and contrast and saturation and color hues and all that but it still looks pretty one dimensional. It would be way easier to make a blonde a brunette. I’m going to keep working on it and see how natural I can make it look.

I’ve also been brushing up on colors. I’ve never studied color before so i thought I’d take some time to familiar myself with the basics.

Primary colors in color wheel: red, blue, and yellow.

These are the colors that create all the other colors and (yellows a bad idea against white) cannot be made by other colors being mixed together.

Secondary colors: green, violet, and orange

These are the colors made from mixing the primary colors together.

Color Harmony:

“Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12 part color wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange. Usually one of the three colors predominates.”

“Complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green”

Look in nature for harmonious color schemes.

Week 2: CRAP

Find at least 4 images (from magazines, the internet, digital photos of posters, billboards, etc, scans of flyers, etc). Each image should embody one or more of the CRAP principles. Explain how each image embodies those principles. Briefly discuss the merits and/or shortcomings of the CRAP principles in terms of their usefulness as a design aid.

CRAP: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity

Image #1: Love Happens

Contrast

Names, tag line, title, and details at the bottom of the ad are all different font sizes.
Names and title are green while tag line is black
White background makes words and picture pop

Repetition

Names and title are both the same color green
The picture of Eckhart and Aniston has a lot of green in it as well
Ever item is horizontally placed on the ad

Alignment

Horizontal
Tag line and title are centered
Focus is centered because of the position of the actors as well

Proximity

Names of the actors are next to each other at the top of the page
The tag line flows into the title because it is right above it
Nothing is squished, everything has space around it, this makes the ad very clear and easy to look at

I noticed that you can use the CRAP principles for things you don’t want people to notice as well such as the information in small type at the bottom of the ad. This is easy to ignore because it does not follow the CRAP principles. Its font is light and skinny which doesn’t show up well against the white background. The small type is only at the bottom of the page, there is nothing to connect it to the rest of the ad. It is aligned with the bottom of the page so that it can be easily ignored. Since everything else on the page is so clear, especially the title which is directly above the small type, the eye is uninterested in examining this part of the ad.

Image #2: Diet Coke

Contrast

“Flirt with taste. Not calories.” Is written so that the words “Flirt”, “taste”, and “calories” are larger than “with” and “not”.
The bright red words and brown/red coke bottle stick out from the black and white background
The word “Diet” is the only word not written in a red font, which along with its position (above and to the right of the word “Coke”) , makes it seems like an after thought. The advertisement is trying to say “even though its ‘diet’ coke, it still tastes good”, so their main focus is to sell the taste. The font of the word “diet” is sort of cursive style which makes people think “fancy” or “classy”. This coordinates with the stars and circles design as well as with the woman who looks like she’s dressed to go out on the town.

Repetition

The red is repeated in the tag line, the bottle of coke and the word “Coke” on the bottle and in the bottom right hand corner
The swirly circle pattern coming out of the bottle is also at the top right hand side of the ad as well as a similar looking design of circles and stars along the bottom of the ad
The same logo that is on the bottle is in the bottom right hand corner of the ad, repetition of the product is important because it is the main focus of the ad

Alignment

Our eyes automatically read from left to right so placing the words of the left hand side and the image on the right hand side is easy to look at
The two sentences are separated while the words within each sentence are close together.
The bottle is placed right below the tag line
The right side the ad isn’t bare of color or words because of the diet coke logo.

Proximity

The women’s eyes seem to be looking at the words “Flirt with taste...” which, to me at least, looks like it’s what she’s thinking. The woman is in a “flirty” position as well; laughing, touching her face, leaning forward, etc.
Both the diet coke logos are at the bottom half of the ad

I think Robin Williams should have added an S at the end of CRAP to make it CRAPS, and the S would stand for SIMPLICITY

People like images that are easy to look at. A clear image equals a clear message, which is what images try to present.

The yellow against the black and white makes the important information stand out (while simultaneously symbolizing urine)
The white against the black back ground is clear to read
The bold yellow font is in contrast to the white normal font
The pretty, old fashioned, smiling woman holding a glass of horse urine is an example of how contrast can create humour

The message could not be easier to read because of the large and simple font
Humour makes people more interested than just the dry facts

The two models have contrasting outfits – ones black and the other is mostly white
There are about five different font styles, 6 different font sizes, and 2 different font colors
The red letters against the black, white and grey stands out

Repetition

The red “new wave” is reflected in the red “the disco darlings”
All other text is black
The same font style is used for “the hottest names to know in Canadian music” and below with “the disco darlings: fan death”

their image is more important than their information since it is placed at the bottom in small lettering

Some things I learnt from looking at these images:

clearity and simplicity goes a long way
black and white can’t go wrong

red on black and white stands out and takes focus

contrast in font keeps information from becoming borin
you can control what the eye focuses on as well as what it doesn’t focus on
large fonts and cursive looking fonts are popular right now
I think the photographs serve to catch the attention of the eye then the words give the wanted information

Week 1
Your first post on your blog should be a reaction to the Digital Media lecture. Answer the following questions in your post: What were your impressions of the term “digital media” before the first class? Did your impressions change in any way after the first lecture, and if so, in what way? Why should a student in RTA take a course like this one in digital media? Finally, was McLuhan right?

Blog numero uno,
Before my first class of Digital Media I didn’t have a clear perception of what Digital Media was but I gathered that it was a technical, computer based class. Since the majority of the media is currently digitally communicated, i.e. computers; television; and radio, I assumed we’d be learning about the inner workings of these technologies and how to use them to our advantage.
After the first lecture I realized that Digital Media is almost everywhere I look. Advertisements, clothing, CD covers, posters, websites, buildings/interior design, signage, etc. I enjoy using computers and am stoked to start creating my own designs and works of digital media.

Although I am still uncertain about what I want to specialize in within the radio and television field, I know that a digital media class will help me with whatever I choose. As I mentioned before, digital media is everywhere, therefore it will most likely be a part of whatever career I choose to pursue. There are countless types of digital media within the field of television, including animated programs and commercials. The graphic design element of the course will be useful for creating any sort of visual concept I want to convey. The design of whatever I do is the first impression to my intended audience and the way I am going to attract their attention, interest, and business.

Enough about me...
In 1964 Marshall McLuhan wrote Understanding Media and from this piece of literature sprang his most famous quote: “The Medium is the Message”. McLuhan saw what was really effecting people minds, as well as society, when they were receiving information/messages by watching TV, listening to the radio, reading a book, etc, was not the content but the actual medium through which they were receiving it. The invention of the telephone, for example, didn’t change the conversations people were having but rather the way they had them. The medium changed society and culture, not the messages which we communicated by using it. Television sends its most effective messages by using images, radio through sound, and books/literature through the written word. Whenever a new medium is invented there is a shift in culture; people adjust and communicate and learn differently. The audience can have three very different experiences and interpretations when receiving the same message through three different mediums.

I think McLuhan is right. The messages we send through different mediums are infinite in content but the medium we choose to send them highly influences these messages. For example, if I call someone and they don’t answer then they text me back “what’s up?”. I know that, for some reason, they can’t or don’t want to talk. The message I get through the medium of text, in this situation, is I can’t or don’t want to talk, not “What’s up?”.
